Komkrit Tepthian – Artist based in Bangkok
Highlighting the value and significance of historical buildings and objects, the Iconography in Contemporary Conditions series serves as an informative tool and historical record of a myriad of events and core local wisdom in each era. The works were inspired by the artist’s field visits at multiple historical sites in Thailand and were moved by the loss and destruction of valuable tokens.
“I assemble plastic toys to replace the missing parts of Buddhist statues. In Thailand, Buddhist statues are beheaded at archaeological sites, temples and other important religious sites. I have also found out that many heads and ancient artifacts made their way to museums and private collections in different countries in Europe and America. The traumatizing issue is that the heads of Buddhist statues are not revered by these collectors. Rather, they are used to decorate homes, staircases and even hat racks. The use of these building blocks, which are plastic toys invented in Europe, in my work should be able to adequately demonstrate the changed values of Buddhism and lead to a sense of imagination, because the imaginations of our younger generations do not view ancient artifacts as the roots of their wisdom.”

1. General Stone sculptures of generals surround the Ordination Hall.
The figures are made of green stone bought from China during the reign of Rama III. These figures consist of Chinese soldiers, civilian nobles, eunuchs, gods and xians. There are as many as 112 figures in the set.
1. ขุนนางทหาร
ศิลาสลักรูปขุนทหาร ตั้งอยู่บริเวณรอบพระอุโบสถ เป็นตุ๊กตาศิลาเขียวที่สั่งซื้อมาจากประเทศจีนในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 ซึ่งตุ๊กตาเหล่านี้ประกอบไปด้วย รูปทหาร ตุ๊กตาขุนนางฝ่ายพลเรือน ขันที รูปเทพเจ้า และรูปเซียนของจีน โดยตุ๊กตาชุดนี้มีจำนวนทั้งหมด 112 ชิ้นเลยทีเดียว
2. Soldiers
Stone sculptures of sailors surround the master heads of the piles in the vicinity of the monument housing the cremated remains of Vice Admiral Phraya Ratchawangsan (Si Kamonnawin, Thailand’s first Minister of Defense) and the Phra Tham Chedi Monument. This area is located in front of the Ordination Hall opposite the Khao Mo area. The sailor sculpture has been repaired and the original surface is not clearly visible. However, compared to the other three sailor sculptures around the master heads of the piles in this area, the stone seems to be gray-green with black specks consistent with the source of stone production in Ningbo, Zhejiang in China.
2. ทหาร
ประติมากรรมสลักหินรูป ทหารเรือ ตั้งอยู่บริเวณหัวเสาในพื้นที่อนุสาวรีย์บรรจุอัฐิ พลเรือโท พระยาราชวังสัน (ศรี กมลนาวิน รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงกลาโหมคนแรกของประเทศไทย) และอนุสาวรีย์ พระธรรมเจดีย์ พื้นที่ดังกล่าวอยู่บริเวณด้านหน้าของพระอุโบสถ ตรงข้ามกับพื้นที่เขามอ ประติมากรรมทหารเรือชิ้นนี้มีการซ่อมแซมจนไม่สามารถเห็นผิวเดิมของวัสดุได้เด่นชัด แต่เมื่อเทียบเคียงกับ ประติมกรรมทหารเรือชิ้นอื่นอีก 3 ชิ้นที่อยู่บริเวณหัวเสาในพื้นที่นี้จะพบว่า เนื้อของหินนั้นมีลักษณะสีเขียวอมเทา มีลายจุดสีดำ ซึ่งตรงกับแหล่งผลิตในกลุ่มศิลาเมืองหนิงโป มณฑลเจ้อเจียง ของประเทศจีน
3. Zhongli Quan
The sculpture of Zhongli Quan represents the second of the Eight Immortals. He is depicted as a fat man with his hair in buns at his temples and his shirt open to show his bare belly as he holds a large banana leaf fan in his hand. As the legend goes, his banana leaf fan has multiple powers. It can even be used to revive a dead person. This sculpture is located behind the Ordination Hall on the left side.

ฮั่นเจ็งหลีเป็นเซียนองค์ที่สองของโป๊ยเซียน มีลักษณะเป็นชายร่างอ้วน ไว้ผมมวยสองข้างของศรีษะ เปิดเสื้อเปลือยหน้าท้องมีพุงพลุ้ย มือถือพัดใบกล้วยขนาดใหญ่ ซึ่งตามตำนานพัดใบกล้วยนี้ อิทธิฤทธิ์มากมาย สามารถพัดคนตายให้ฟื้นคืนชีพได้ ประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้ตั้งอยู่ด้านหลังของพระอุโบสถฝั่งซ้าย
4. A Monkey Holding a Peach with a Baby Monkey.
This animal stone sculpture is located behind the stupa. Historical data indicates that the statue is the work of a Chinese sculptor from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.To the Chinese, a monkey holding a peach represents diligence, stability, good health and longevity. This sculpture may also represent fertility
4. ลิงถือลูกท้อและลูกลิง
ประติมากรรมศิลาสลักประเภท รูปสัตว์ ตั้งอยู่ด้านหลังขององค์พระปรางค์ จากข้อมูลทางประวัติศาสตร์บ่งชี้ให้เห็นรูปแบบงานช่างจีนของเมืองหนิงโป มณฑลเจ้อเจียงลิงถือลูกท้อในความหมายของชาวจีนนั้น หมายถึง การทำงานที่ดี มีความมั่นคง สุขภาพแข็งแรง อายุยืน และในประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้อาจรวมไปถึงการมีบุตรหลานสืบทอดเชื้อสายวงศ์ตระกูลอีกด้วย
5. Garuda
Garuda sculptures are categorized as custom-made for secure balance.
It is believed that models or samples were made and sent for Chinese sculptors to follow. The customization of the sculptures might have been aimed at making them consistent with some of the designs such as telling popular Buddhist folklore or decorating a garden to tell stories Thai-style. Other than the garuda, Wat Arun also has kinnaris.

ศิลาสลักรูปครุฑจัดอยู่ในหมวดหมู่ของอับเฉาที่สั่งทำโดยเฉพาะ และคาดว่าน่าจะมีการทำต้นแบบหรือตัวอย่างส่งไปให้ช่างชาวจีนเป็นผู้แกะสลักตาม การสั่งทำประติมากรรมศิลาโดยเฉพาะ อาจเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับการออกแบบบางอย่าง เช่น เพื่อเล่าเรื่องในพุทธศาสนาที่นิยม หรือเพื่อนำมาจัดสวนเพื่อแสดงเรื่องราวอย่างไทย นอกจากครุฑแล้ว ที่วัดอรุณแห่งนี้ยังมี ตัวกินนรีปรากฏให้พบเห็นอีกด้วย

6. Goddesses
Stone sculptures of goddesses are located around the octagonal chedi in front of the right Ordination Hall on the right side. This octagonal chedi has a total of eight sides, each one containing a sculpture. The octagonal chedi combines Thai and Chinese architectural styles. It was built with marble and granite, while the upper parts are segments that reduce in size as they taper upward
7. Giant SoldierLocated in front of the stupa, this sculpture of a soldier holds a weapon. He is depicted as a stout, muscular man. His face is adorned with fangs and has an aggressive expression aimed at intimidation. This stone sculpture serves as the gatekeeper due to the belief that he guards against all nefarious danger. The construction of sculptures or carvings at the entrance of a religious place is practiced in many countries. For example, Thailand uses Phaya Nak (serpents), Cambodia uses lions and Egypt uses sphinxes, etc.
8. Crocodiles
The two stone sculptures of crocodiles are located in front of the Chinese pavilions at the riverside. They are believed to have been sculpted after the stupa was completed. As the legend goes, a foundation of hundreds or thousands of teak logs were laid in a horizontal grid when the stupa was constructed. Under the grounds of the stupa is a drainage system that drains water out through tunnels into the Chao Phraya River. Crocodiles used to live in this drainage path. The sculptor may have sculpted these two crocodiles as “guardians” at the docks of Wat Arun.
6. เทพธิดา
ศิลาสลักรูปเทพธิดา ตั้งอยู่บริเวณเจดีย์แปดเหลี่ยมด้านหน้าอุโบสถฝั่งขวา เจดีย์แปดเหลี่ยมนี้จะมีทั้งหมดแปดด้าน ในแต่ละด้านจะมีรูปศิลาประดับอยู่ทั้งหมด เจดีย์แปดเหลี่ยมนี้มีรูปแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรมไทยและจีนสร้างขึ้นด้วยหินอ่อนผสมหินแกรนิต ส่วนบนมียอดเป็นปล้องลดขนาดขึ้นไปตามลำดับ
7. ทหารยักษ์ศิลาสลักรูปทหารถืออาวุธ ตั้งอยู่บริเวณทางเข้าด้านหน้าของพระปรางค์ ลักษณะเป็นชายกำยำ ร่างกายหนา ใบหน้าที่ประดับด้วยเขี้ยวและท่าทีที่ดุดันแสดงออกได้ถึงความน่าเกรงขาม รูปศิลาสลักชิ้นนี้เป็นดั่งทวารบาลผู้รักษาประตูในความเชื่อเรื่องการเฝ้ารักษาป้องกันภัยอันตรายจากสิ่งไม่ดีทั้งปวง การสร้างรูปปั้นหรือรูปสลักบริเวณทางเข้าออกของศาสนสถาน เป็นที่นิยมในหลายประเทศ เช่นประเทศไทยใช้พญานาค ประเทศเขมรใช้ตัวสิงห์ ศิลปะอียิปต์ใช้ตัวสฟิงค์ เหล่านี้เป็นต้น
8. จระเข้
ประติมากรรมหิน จระเข้ 2 ตัว ตั้งอยู่บริเวณด้านหน้าศาลาเก๋งจีนท่าน้ำ คาดว่าสร้างขึ้นหลังจากพระปรางค์สร้างเสร็จสมบูรณ์ โดยมีเรื่องเล่าต่อกันมาว่า การสร้างพระปรางค์นั้นจะต้องขุดวางรากฐาน โดยที่ใช้ต้นไม้สักที่เป็นท่อนซุงเป็นร้อยเป็นพันปูเรียงไว้ตามแนวนอนขัดกันเป็นตาราง พื้นลานพระปรางค์มีทางระบายน้ำจากด้านใต้ส่งต่อมาทางอุโมงค์และออกมาสู่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ในสมัยก่อนนั้นมีจระเข้อาศัยอยู่ในเส้นทางระบายน้ำนี้ ซึ่งอาจจะตั้งสมมุติฐานของการสร้างประติมากรรมรูปจระเข้ 2 ตัวได้ว่า ผู้สร้างต้องการให้จระเข้เป็นเสมือนผู้เฝ้ารักษาบริเวณท่าน้ำวัดอรุณฯก็เป็นได้

Solo Exhibition at Singapore
This solo exhibition I used of everyday objects, combined with his exceptional sculpturing skill to create works of art that questions and challenges the audience’s view, experience and memories on the value and the significance from the historical cultures and beliefs to historical buildings and objects.
This series of artworks present mainly Buddha and other deity images; how the image changes according to the conditions of the era and various factors that affecting it.
